Welcome to Learning on Purpose
The name Learning on Purpose has two important meanings to me.
First, a sense of purpose is a critical condition for learning. We know that people learn more deeply when they understand the relevance and value of what they are learning. We know the best teachers act with deep care for and understanding of whom, what, and why they are teaching. We know leaders run more effective organizations when they make strategic decisions based on a clear and well-communicated purpose.
Second, it’s a personal goal of mine to learn on purpose. I try to be intentional about embracing new ideas, questioning old ones, and finding signals in the noise of trends and takes and research and anecdotes that swirls around education.
In this newsletter I translate my work and research into usable, helpful insights for people who work in organizations dedicated to learning (schools and beyond). You’ll see glimpses into the places I visit and learn from the educators I meet. You’ll walk alongside me as I process new ideas and try to connect theory to practice. And there will be links. I love links.
About Eric
More than twenty years ago, I stumbled into teaching. I was immediately captivated: I had never had a job as emotionally complex, as intellectually challenging, nor as creative.
Since then, I’ve worked in all kinds of schools and learning organizations: in the classroom and on leadership teams, in person and online, with students and with adults. Most recently, I spent a decade at Global Online Academy, first as an instructional coach and ultimately as Chief Program Officer, working with schools around the world to expand our ideas about when, where, and how learning happens.
Now, I’m a consultant who partners with schools and learning organizations to help them make sense of what’s changing in education. My mission is to help schools be responsive to their learners, their communities, and a rapidly changing world.
